Touchy Subjects: Organizer Politics

November 12th, 2007 · No Comments

donkey and elephantEvery dance scene has its organizers; the folks who book the dance hall, hire the DJs, book the bands, promote the instructors, bring in workshops, etc. There are two main types of organizers: for profit and not-for-profit. Now, I’m not saying one is bad and one is good, but they are different and impact the dance scene in different ways. Either one can be good or bad, and ultimately it comes down to the people who make a difference.

There will always be politics. Organizers do not always see eye to eye on how to best invest in their own dance community. Some think recruitment is the most important focus, while others feel improving the quality of the dancers should top the list, while others feel that providing live music should be the key priority. This can lead to hard feelings and cliques among dancers.

How should you let this affect you?

Well, if you’re part of a non-profit community, then I suggest you dive in as deep as you want to go. Be the eager volunteer, ready to help out with anything. You’ll learn a lot more than just dance steps and could potentially make some great friends along the way.

At the same time, don’t be too quick to jump on any bandwagons; you may unknowingly be taking sides in a behind the scenes political battle. Remember the reason you’re dancing at all is to have fun. If someone constantly complains about an instructor, a DJ, or a band and you simply buy into it, you may be missing an opportunity to find out what truly suits your tastes. Be open and welcoming to whatever comes your way (well almost), taking care not to latch on to one organizer and think of them as the best thing since sliced bread.

Remember that social dancing is a risky investment for organizers. If something costs a lot, there is usually a very good reason. Try to learn why (if it matters to you) so you can contribute your improvements. Otherwise, do your best to just stay out of any politics and enjoy the dance. You have enough new information to learn and navigate through as it is.
