How to avoid getting caught by The Prowler

Remember when we told you about The Prowler? As promised, here are some tips to avoid falling into his trap:

This person may be genuinely attractive, but you don’t want to ruin your new hobby by starting off on the wrong foot (no pun intended). To discover if this person is A Prowler, or just really friendly, take it slow and observe how they act with others. Be nice, of course, but don’t accept too much all at once.

Don’t let this new interest monopolize your night. Be sure to get dances in with other people, and take some time to watch how they interact with other people. Do they look like they’re hitting on everyone else, too? Do others act excited to see them, or do they seem to avoid this person?

Don’t accept invitations for free private lessons unless you are 100% sure the offer is innocent, and even then be careful that they actually do know how to dance well as you don’t want to be taught bad habits. (Hint: Dancers who really know their stuff usually don’t hand out free instruction like candy… unless they’re in a very small dance scene and desperate to help the scene’s dance quality improve. Been there. Done that!)

Remember, you’re here to have fun. Not that flirting and all it can lead to isn’t fun, but you don’t need to complicate things at the moment. You already have a new dance and a new social scene to deal with. You’ll have more fun if you take it slow and steady. If you really are hoping for romance, be patient. You’re sure to find genuine sparks sooner or later.
