Get Organized

This “primer” is not really for those getting started in dancing. It’s for those starting out organizing. I love it when people get so passionate about a dance that they go through the effort of organizing dance events themselves. Be it a dance, a workshop, bringing in a band, or creating a group, these people make it possible for the rest of us to enjoy dancing. And, the work they do often goes unthanked.

I have a few simple tips to make your event organizing much easier:

  1. Fight the temptation to do it all yourself. Yes, you lose some control when you put your trust in others. “Here, you can carry the sound equipment up the stairs,” is not the kind of help seeking I’m talking about. Be open about what you’re planning and ask others to be involved. The more you delegate from the beginning the less burn-out you’ll experience, and you’ll help your community grow.
  2. Involve others. Wait, isn’t that what I just said? Yes. It is. I would say it’s tip number 1,2,3,and 7 to being an effective organizer in a dance community.
  3. Thank those who help you! Don’t take all the credit for yourself. Those who were happy to help this time won’t help again if you don’t show your gratitude.
  4. Have a clear mission. Figure out why you’re doing what you’re doing and pare it down into a slogan or a catch phrase. When you take on new projects, double check that they fit within your mission.

That should be enough to get you started. Experienced organizers out there, what are your top tips to putting on a good event?

My #1 tip for organizing an event is to start early. If the event is big enough you’re probably going to be stressed no matter what, but starting early helps a ton.
